How Talk to Medi Is Bringing AI to Healthcare’s Most Challenging Workflows

Column by Kino Song, Co-founder, Talk to Medi

My background in mechatronic engineering and artificial intelligence led me to explore how technology could be used to address some of the challenges facing healthcare. That interest became personal through my father, who is a gastroenterologist. I saw firsthand the amount of administrative work physicians manage every day that takes time away from caring for patients. It made me think about how AI could support healthcare professionals by taking on some of those burdens, which ultimately led to the creation of Talk to Medi. Headshot of Kino Song

Talk to Medi is a healthcare AI company providing AI-powered call center and front-office solutions for family doctors, specialty clinics and medical centers. Our technology combines voice AI, automation and scheduled workflows to help clinical teams complete administrative and clinical tasks automatically. Rather than simply providing software that improves efficiency, we designed Talk to Medi to work alongside healthcare teams as a digital coworker, helping complete tasks throughout an entire workflow.

One area where we see a significant opportunity is specialty healthcare, where patients can face long and complicated processes before receiving care. For example, a patient referred to a specialist may need to navigate insurance requirements, scheduling, patient intake and other administrative steps before an appointment can take place. A missed phone call, unanswered email or missed appointment can delay that entire process, creating additional work for the clinic while potentially delaying care for the patient. Talk to Medi helps automate those touchpoints, using AI to communicate with patients through phone calls and text messages, collect information, provide updates and remind patients about upcoming appointments. By filling those gaps, we can help clinics keep appointments on schedule while making the process easier for patients and healthcare teams.

Our focus on specialty workflows is also what differentiates Talk to Medi. Healthcare systems and workflows vary significantly between countries, states and specialties, so we work with design partners to understand those differences and tailor our technology accordingly. We have also developed our own voice AI technology with a focus on accuracy, clinical knowledge and natural communication. This allows us to build technology specifically for healthcare rather than trying to apply a general-purpose AI solution to a complex clinical environment.

As we looked to expand from Canada into the United States, Wisconsin quickly became an attractive place to build. The state is home to a deep healthcare and digital health ecosystem, as well as talented graduates and researchers from institutions such as the University of Wisconsin–Madison. We have also seen strong interest in supporting AI companies that can bring new technology and economic opportunities to the state. For Talk to Medi, that creates a natural alignment as we build our Wisconsin team and establish the state as our first U.S. market.

Looking ahead, our vision is for Talk to Medi to become the digital front door for specialty healthcare, helping connect patients, physicians, medical centers, insurance providers and other organizations throughout the healthcare journey. By taking on more of the communication and administrative burden, we can help healthcare teams spend more of their time focused on what matters most: caring for patients.
